What are Orthobiologics?

The term “orthobiologics” has been used to describe treatments that can positively affect cellular and molecular events in tissue healing.  These treatments can positively affect cellular and molecular events in tissue healing.

These treatments include:

  • Autologous (originated from the patient) blood-derived formulations such as platelet-rich plasma (PRP)
  • Autologous serum and cell therapy preparations involving cells derived from bone marrow (BMAC)

What are the “right” Orthobiologics?

There exists tremendous variability in the composition and biological activity of the different orthobiologic formulations and treatments.  There exists many sources and formulations of these orthobiologics resulting in difficulty in interpreting the ideal treatment and focusing on the appropriate clinical problem being treated.

Our goal is to characterize the composition and biologic activity of the orthobiologic formulation, the underlying tissue pathology to be treated, and define the desired biologic target to treat.  By attaining these goals, we can achieve a precision medicine approach in the area of orthobiologic treatment.
